Keep Up to Date

Social media

Social media can be an excellent way to keep up to date. What platform you favour may depend on your discipline area.

  • Follow researchers, journals, organisations and conferences in your research field
  • Search for the latest commentary on a topic, e.g. #diabetes research

Social media includes:

  • LinkedIn
  • Thread
  • Twitter
  • Instagram
  • Blogs - subscribe by email to blogs if you want new posts sent to your inbox

Altmetrics

Alternative metrics provide data on online activity including social media attention such as views, downloads and shares. This provides another entry point into knowing who is noticing research of interest to you. In Scopus, PlumX metrics provides this data.  You can also use the Altmetric Explorer database.

Researcher networks

Many sites for academics and scholars provide 'following' options. You can follow top authors or authors you know by signing up with these sites. Go to the Researcher IDs and Profiles guide to find out more.

  • ResearchGate and Academia.edu
  • Google Scholar My Citations
  • Social Science Research Network

Some reference managers also enable you to follow researchers and topics in your field.  For example:

  • Zotero
  • ReadCube Papers
