EndNote for Mac

PDF with DOI

Importing a reference from a PDF

  • The PDF must be publisher-generated, i.e., downloaded from a database
  • It must already be on your computer
  • It must have a DOI (digital object identifier)

Open your EndNote library, click File > Import

  • Navigate to your saved PDF
  • Select Options at the bottom left of the Finder window and set options as shown below

  • Select Import
  • The reference and PDF are now in your EndNote library

Viewing the PDF

  • The paperclip icon next to the reference in the main panel shows you that there is a PDF attached to it
  • Use the Layout button to choose a layout that will show you the PDF pages (any of the PDF or Split layouts)
  • Make sure you also check and correct the reference that will be generated in your chosen style, using one of the Preview layouts

PDF without DOI

It is possible to create a reference from a PDF without a DOI, although you will need to enter most data manually.

  • Import the PDF as shown above
  • The EndNote reference will use the filename as the title
  • Double-click the reference (or highlight then press <Cmd+E>) to open the reference window
  • Complete any missing information and check using Preview layout
