Insert / delete citations

Before you start, make sure your Endnote library is open and accessible from the machine your Word document is on.

Inserting an in-text citation

  • Position the cursor where you want the in-text citation to appear, and add a space
  • Select the EndNote X8 tab on the Word ribbon
  • Either:
    • Select Go to Endnote, highlight the required reference in EndNote, then click the Insert Citation button  
    • Or in Word, click the Insert Citation button, search for the reference you want to insert, highlight the correct search result and choose Insert  
  • EndNote returns you to Word, the citation appears where your cursor was, and the full reference appears at the end of the document, in a reference list

Deleting an in-text citation

  • Click on the citation you want to remove; it should turn grey
  • From the EndNote X8 tab options select Edit and Manage Citations
  • A pop-up appears with the citation highlighted
  • Click the dropdown menu with the cog icon and select Remove Citation > OK

Note: If this is the only time the citation occurs it will also disappear from the reference list or bibliography.

Edit citations

  • The default style for in-text citations (APA 6th style) is (author, year)
  • To add extra information, such as adding page numbers for a quotation, select Edit and Manage Citation(s) on the EndNote X8 Word tab
