EndNote for Mac

Troubleshooting

The corporate author isn't displaying correctly, e.g., Health, M. o. instead of Ministry of Health
  • Open the EndNote library record and add a comma directly after the last letter of the name
  • Check Tips for manual entry for more detail
The EndNote X8 tab isn't showing when I open Word
  • Sometimes the tab doesn't install correctly when Endnote is downloaded
  • See EndNote X8 tab for instructions on customising, configuring or reinstalling the tab
My references aren't displaying in correct APA 6th style
  • First check that the style selector has been set to APA 6th - AUTX8 as described in the style section of Get the Software
  • If that doesn't work, try other troubleshooting topics for resolving page number or curly bracket problems
My in-text citations are showing in curly brackets {Smith, 2017 #2}
  • The Instant Formatting option has probably been turned off
  • To turn formatting back on, click Update Citations and Bibliography
The page numbers I add to my in-text citation keep disappearing
  • Citations and bibliography entries created using EndNotes's Cite While You Write (CWYW) functionality have embedded field codes
  • As these negate normal Word commands, any changes must be done using options on the CWYW tab
Help! I've tried all the fixes but my citations and references still have errors in them
  • Sometimes your best, or only, option is to convert your document to plain text. This enables the document to be edited as normal in Word
  • However, you should delay this step until you have finished writing as it permanently disables CWYW
How can I insert an in-text citation for a corporate author and its abbreviation, e.g. Health Research Council of New Zealand [HRCNZ]
  • Insert the citation first, the in-text citation shows: (Health Research Council of New Zealand, 2017)
  • Click Edit & Manage Citation(s)
  • Select Exclude Author from the Formatting box
  • Enter Health Research Council of New Zealand [HRCNZ], in the Prefix field and click OK
  • The in-text citation is now showing: (Health Research Council of New Zealand [HRCNZ], 2017)
I'm a Mac Mojave user, I can't used CWYW tools! Whenever I insert a citation in Word, it returns back to the EndNote Library
This is due to the fact that automation has been turned off by Mojave 's security & privacy functions.
  • Go into the Apple menu
  • Click System Preferences
  • Click Serurity & Privacy
  • Click the Privacy tab
  • Click the Automation options
  • Ensure that both Microsoft Word and EndNote are both turned on
My Mac doesn't know which application to use to open EndNote export files
Some Mac computers won't automatically open database export files in EndNote X8, such as .ris and .enw file types, and ask you to browse to the application every time you try to open them. Follow these steps for each different file type that you want to open automatically in EndNote X8:
  • Download the .ris or .enw file to your computer
  • Right-click (or Ctrl+click with Apple mouse) on the file and select Get Info
  • Under Open with: choose Other...
  • Browse to EndNote X8 in the Applications folder > tick Always Open With > click Add
  • You will return to the info box for the file, and you should see EndNote X8 selected under Open with:
  • Click Change All... so that EndNote X8 is selected for all files of this file type, and click Continue to confirm
