Exporting references from Google Scholar

To export references from Google Scholar into EndNote, follow the process described below.

Export multiple references to EndNote

You can also select a number of references and export them to your EndNote:

  • Log in to your Google account
  • Select the references from your search results by clicking on the star icon

  • These references will then be saved to My Library. Click My library on the top right corner:

  • On the “My library” page, select references that you would like to export to your EndNote. Click Export icon to export references to EndNote:

Export a single reference to EndNote

First, make sure your EndNote library is open. Search Google Scholar, and apply search filters if necessary, to retrieve relevant results.

There are two ways to export a reference to EndNote:

Method one:

  • Click on the Cite button Google Scholar Cite button under a reference you want to export to EndNote
  • The Cite box will open, click on EndNote

Google Scholar Cite box

  • If you are using Firefox, an .enw file will open in EndNote and the reference will be imported
  • If you are using another browser, such as Google Chrome, the .enw file will download - double-click on it from the downloads bar or saved location to open it in EndNote and import the reference

Open the imported reference and make any changes necessary to produce an accurate citation.

Method Two: making a change to the settings to create export links:

  • Google Scholar menu > Settings > Bibliography manager
  • Check Show links to import citations into and choose EndNote from the dropdown menu

  • Click Save
  • Now when you search, Import into EndNote will appear under each search result
  • Note that this setting change will revert once the browser is closed
