Exporting references from ScienceDirect

To export references from ScienceDirect into EndNote, follow the process described below.

Step 1: Select reference/s and export file

First, make sure your EndNote library is open. Search ScienceDirect, and apply search filters if necessary, to retrieve relevant results.

To select a single reference to export:

  • Click the article title to open the full record
  • In the top menu, choose Export
  • The export citation pop out window will open
    • Under Format, check RIS (for EndNote, Reference Manager, ProCite)
    • Choose to download just the citation or the citation and abstract
    • Click Export

To select several references to export at the same time:

  • Tick the boxes next to the references
  • At the top of the search results, click Export
  • The export citation pop out window will open
    • Under Format, check RIS (for EndNote, Reference Manager, ProCite)
    • Choose to download just the citation or the citation and abstract
    • Click Export

Step 2: Open reference file in EndNote

  • If you are using Firefox, an .RIS file will open in EndNote and the reference/s will be imported
  • If you are using another browser, such as Google Chrome, the .RIS file will download - double-click on it from the downloads bar or saved location to open it in EndNote and import the reference/s

Open each imported reference and make any changes necessary to produce an accurate citation.
