EndNote for PC

A comprehensive guide to the reference management software EndNote.

Term lists

  • If you frequently import references from the PubMed version of MEDLINE to EndNote you may find it helpful to add EndNote's list of medical journal terms to your library.
  • The list provides non-abbreviated, APA-compliant versions of abbreviated journal titles indexed in MEDLINE. It also automatically updates the title field when records are imported from MEDLINE to EndNote
  • Users of Vancouver referencing will also find the list useful as it can translate full journal titles into the abbreviated titles Vancouver requires

Medical Journals Term List

Delete existing terms

If your library already contains medical references you probably already have entries in a journals term list. We strongly recommend these are deleted to avoid duplications that may prevent accurate matching of correct titles or abbreviations.

  • Open your EndNote library
  • Click Tools > Open Term Lists > Journals Term List
  • Highlight the first title in the Term List dialog box, select all by scrolling to the last title with the <Shift> key pressed
  • Click Delete Term > Close

Import the medical journals term list

  • Open your EndNote library
  • Click Tools > Define Term Lists
  • Highlight Journalsclick Import List
  • Locate and open the EndNote Terms Lists folder: C:\\Program Files\EndNote X6\Terms Lists
  • Highlight Medicalclick Open
  • When the list has been imported you will see a message like:

14164 terms inserted into the ‘Journals’ terms list

  • Click OK, then Close the Term Lists dialog box

Note: This list is specific to the library you have added it to. If you have more than one library you need to repeat the process for each one.

Disable automatic updating of journals term lists

EndNote automatically updates the journals term list every time a reference with a new title is added to your library. Because this can interfere with accurate matching of correct titles or abbreviations, if you regularly import references from PubMed you should disable automatic updating.

  • Click Edit > Preferences > Term Lists
  • Uncheck the options Update lists when importing or pasting references and Update lists during data entry
  • Click OK

Journal abbreviations

If you have a full journal title and need to know the abbreviated title (or vice versa), try the following tools:
