Insert / delete citations

Before you start make sure your Endnote library is open and accessible from the machine your Word document is on.

Inserting an in-text citation

  • Position the cursor where you want the in-text citation to appear
  • Select the EndNote X9 tab on the Word ribbon
  • From the options select Go to Endnote, highlight the required reference then click insert citation insert citation graphic
  • EndNote returns you to Word, the citation appears where your cursor was, and the full reference appears at the end of the document

Deleting an in-text citation

  • Click on the citation you want to remove, it should turn grey
  • From the EndNote X9 tab options select Edit and Manage Citations
  • A pop-up appears with the citation highlighted, click the drop-down and select Remove Citation, then OK

Note: If this is the only time the citation occurs it will also disappear from the reference list or bibliography

Edit citations

  • The default style for in-text citations is (author, year)
  • For alterations such as adding page numbers for a quotation use Edit and Manage Citation(s) option on the EndNote X9 Word tab
