EndNote for PC

A comprehensive guide to the reference management software EndNote.

PDF with DOI

Import a reference from a PDF document:

  • The PDF must be publisher-generated, i.e., downloaded from a database
  • It must already be on your computer
  • It must have a DOI (digital object identifier)

Open your EndNote library, click File > Import > File

  • Navigate to your saved PDF
  • Highlight the file name, select Open
  • Select the settings shown below, click Import

  • The reference record and PDF are now in your EndNote library
  • The paperclip icon next to the reference in the main panel shows you that there is a PDF attached to it
  • The PDF appears next to the Preview tab

PDF without DOI

It is possible to create a reference from a PDF without a DOI although you will need to enter most data manually.

  • Import the PDF as shown above
  • The EndNote reference will use the filename as the title
  • Double-click the reference (or highlight then press <Ctrl+E>) to open the reference window
  • Complete any missing information and check using Preview
