EndNote for PC

A comprehensive guide to the reference management software EndNote.

Troubleshooting

The corporate author isn't displaying correctly, e.g., Health, M. o. instead of Ministry of Health
  • Open the EndNote library record and add a comma directly after the last letter of the name
  • Check Tips for manual entry for more detail
How can I remove hyperlinks appeared in my reference list?
  • For Word 2010 and later versions, click File > Options > Proofing
  • Click AutoCorrect Options > AutoFormat As You Type
  • Clear the check box "Internet and network paths with hyperlinks"
The EndNote X8 tab isn't showing when I open Word
  • Sometimes the tab doesn't install correctly when Endnote is downloaded
  • See EndNote X8 tab for instructions on customising, configuring or reinstalling the tab
My references aren't displaying in correct APA 6th style
  • First check that the style selector has been set to APA 6th - AUTX8 as described in the style section of Get the Software
  • If that doesn't work, try other troubleshooting topics for resolving page number or curly bracket problems
My in-text citations are showing in curly brackets {Smith, 2017 #2}
  • The Instant Formatting option has probably been turned off
  • To turn formatting back on, click Update Citations and Bibliography
The page numbers I add to my in-text citation keep disappearing
  • Citations and bibliography entries created using EndNotes's Cite While You Write (CWYW) functionality have embedded field codes
  • As these negate normal Word commands, any changes must be done using options on the CWYW tab
Help! I've tried all the fixes but my citations and references still have errors in them
  • Sometimes your best, or only, option is to convert your document to plain text. This enables the document to be edited as normal in Word
  • However, you should delay this step until you have finished writing as it permanently disables CWYW
How can I insert an in-text citation for a corporate author and its abbreviation, e.g. Health Research Council of New Zealand [HRCNZ]
  • Insert the citation first, the in-text citation shows: (Health Research Council of New Zealand, 2017)
  • Click Edit & Manage Citation(s)
  • Select Exclude Author from the Formatting box
  • Enter Health Research Council of New Zealand [HRCNZ], in the Prefix field and click OK
  • The in-text citation is now showing: (Health Research Council of New Zealand [HRCNZ], 2017)
