Effective searching

To improve your Library search skills and find high-quality, relevant sources of information, you can attend our Library workshops for postgraduates (held on campus and online).

You can also book a consultation with Elwyn Sheehan or Anna Matich, the Future Environments Liaison Librarians, for help with your search strategy.

Find theses & dissertations

It can be really helpful to look at previous theses, dissertations and exegeses, particularly the literature review or bibliography, and the methodology discussion.

Our Find theses and dissertations guide will help you search for theses from AUT, other New Zealand universities, or universities worldwide.

Using work created by others in your exegesis or thesis

If you plan to include any work in your exegesis or thesis that you have not created yourself, such as images, photographs, or diagrams, you will need to reference them, and you will also need permission from the copyright owner to reproduce them. Make sure you give yourself enough time to obtain permission - don't leave it until just before you submit!

Our Using works created by others guide has information on copyright, how to ask for copyright permission, and how to find copyright-free or openly licensed material.

Tricky questions about copyright and your thesis? Talk to Elwyn Sheehan or Anna Matich, the Future Environments Liaison Librarians.

Referencing and reference managers

New to academic referencing, or using an unfamiliar referencing style?

The Referencing page provides lots of information on referencing basics, as well as information on different reference managers (such as EndNote and Zotero), and links to the Library referencing guides and workshops.
