Who is Statistics NZ?

Statistics New Zealand Tatauranga Aotearoa is New Zealands official data agency. It is a government department.
Stats NZ collects information from people and organisations through censuses and surveys and use this information to provide data and statistics about New Zealand. It is the place to find official New Zealand statistics.

NZ statistics for researchers

Under an agreement between Stats NZ and NZ universities, a wide range of statistical resources are available to AUT researchers.

Statistical data packages
Produced for NZ universities, these packages contain an extensive series of tables.

AUT researchers can request an update to any of the tables in the data packages via info@stats.govt.nz

Confidentialised unit record files
Unit record data that are modified to protect the confidentiality of respondents while maintaining the integrity of the data.

AUT researchers can request datasets from confidentialised unit record files via info@stats.govt.nz

Customised data tables
Stats NZ create customised data tables for a fee.

A free web tool that allows you to:
- Create tables from large datasets
- Customise the table by selecting the variables you want and changing the table layout
- Download your table in Excel (up to 100,000 cells) or CSV format (up to a million cells)

Stats NZ surveys people, households, and businesses to produce statistics about New Zealand

Key surveys can be accessed via Datainfo+ and include:

New Zealand General Social Survey
The NZGSS provides a cross-domain perspective of social wellbeing for the population of New Zealand.
Household Economic Survey (expenditure)
Data on household income, housing costs, child poverty and detailed expenditure.
Household Labour Force Survey
Provides quarterly statistics relating to the employed, the unemployed and those not in the labour force.
