EndNote

A guide to the reference management software EndNote for AUT students and researchers..

Installing EndNote on a personal computer

AUT students and staff can download EndNote onto a personal computer or laptop.

Step 1: If you have an earlier version of the EndNote software:

  • Make a backup copy of any existing EndNote libraries and save them (preferably to external storage).
  • Uninstall the earlier version of EndNote from your computer.

Step 2: go to IT Downloads

Login using your AUT network login. In the list of software installs you will find EndNote installer for Windows and for MacOS.

  • Check you have the correct version for your operating system (OS), and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • If Microsoft Word is open, close it.
  • Windows/PC: Right-click the installer file (*.exe) in the downloads folder and select Run as administrator. If you are unable to proceed past the installer download, check your firewall/security settings.
  • Mac: Right-click the installer package (*.pkg) in the downloads folder, and select Open.
  • Create your EndNote library on your computer's local hard drive. Note that storing and editing libraries on a network or cloud drive can lead to corruption and performance issues.
  • Mac users: the default Endnote library (My Endnote Library) will be automatically created in your Documents folder.

Technical assistance

AUT ICT services will help you solve any installation issues:

Access EndNote on Campus

Students

  • EndNote is available on Tech Central computers on campus.
  • You can sync your EndNote library to EndNote Web to save the work you do on these computers.

Staff

If EndNote is not available on your office computer or laptop, you can download the latest EndNote software:

  • from Software Center (Windows)
  • from Self-service (Mac computers)

Note: EndNote libraries created with earlier versions of EndNote may require conversion to run on EndNote 2025. This will be done automatically when opening the library in a later version of EndNote. However the converted version of the library will then not work on earlier versions of the EndNote program. If you are running EndNote X9 or earlier, please consider updating your EndNote version.

System requirements

  • Check Compatibility and system requirements on the EndNote website.
  • EndNote's Cite While You Write (CWYW) functionality is enabled by an EndNote tab automatically added to the Word ribbon when EndNote is is installed.
  • If this tab is not visible in Word, check Troubleshooting in this guide or go to this help page in the EndNote KnowledgeBase.
  • If you have a Mac device which uses a M1 chip, please see this help page in the EndNote KnowledgeBase.
