EndNote for PC

A comprehensive guide to the reference management software EndNote.

Get the software

Access EndNote from campus computers

Students:

  • EndNote is available on student computers on campus
  • When you use an AUT computer on campus, save your library temporarily to C drive: C:\Users\Username\Document

Staff:

  • Staff will find EndNote on their office computer. If the version is earlier than EndNote X9, you may download the EndNote X9 from Software Center (find software Center from your computer menu bar, locate EndNote X9.3.1. and follow the instruction to download the software to your work computer)

Download for off-campus use

  • One copy of EndNote can be installed on personal computers or laptops
  • EndNote libraries with EndNote X9 version will not be compatible with older versions of EndNote. If you need to use your EndNote library in a computer with a X9 version and another computer with an older version of EndNote, you should update the older EndNote version to the latest version X9.3.1

Uninstall previous versions of EndNote

  • Make a backup copy of any existing EndNote libraries and save them to external storage
  • Uninstall EndNote from your computer

Get the EndNote X9 software

  • Students: log in to Blackboard first. From the Blackboard homepage, find the Student Links section and click AUT_DOWNLOAD_ORG to go to the AUT Software Download page. Under the heading EndNote X9 Windows, click the EndNoteX9_9.3.1.exe file to install EndNote X9 for Windows to your home computer.

 Install onto your personal computer

  • Follow the on-screen instructions
  • If you are unable to proceed past the installer download, right-click the installer file in the downloads folder and select Run as administrator. Still unsuccessful? Check your firewall/security settings
  • Save the EndNote library on your computer's local hard drive. Storing and editing libraries on a network drive can lead to corruption and performance issues

Open an Existing Library in EndNote X9.3 and later versions

  • When openning an existing EndNote library with a version lower than X9.3 in an EndNote programme with EndNote X9.3 and later versions, you may encounter a message as seen below asking you to convert your library. Click OK to create a converted library that will work in X9.3 and later versions

  • Save the converted library (the file name will include "-converted" generated by EndNote) to the same location of your existing library
  • Check and ensure the converted library works as it should be (it should have a data folder with the same file name and PDF documents in your library should be able to read, etc.). Close the library
  • Delete your original library and its data folder
  • Remove "-converted" from the file name of the converted library and its data folder to ensure the file names are exactly the same as the original library
