EndNote

A comprehensive guide to the reference management software EndNote.

Installing EndNote on a personal computer

AUT students and Staff can download EndNote onto a personal computer or laptop.

Step 1: If you have an earlier version of the EndNote software:

  • Make a backup copy of any existing EndNote libraries and save them (preferably to external storage)
  • Uninstall the earlier version of EndNote from your computer

Step 2: go to IT Downloads

Login using your AUT network login. You should find these EndNote installers: EndNote X9 and EndNote 21, both for Windows/PC and for Mac.

  • Check you have the correct version for your operating system (OS), and follow the on-screen instructions
  • If MS Word is open close it
  • Windows/PC: Right-click the installer file (*.exe) in the downloads folder and select Run as administrator. If you are unable to proceed past the installer download, check your firewall/security settings
  • Mac: Right-click the installer package (*.pkg) in the downloads folder, and select Open. Please note that to install EN X9 on a Mac you will need to download and install 4 separate files in a specific order
  • If installing EndNote X9, follow the prompts to update it to the latest version X9.3.3
  • If EndNote X9 is being installed, do NOT follow the prompt to upgrade to EndNote 20. EndNote 20 should be downloaded from the IT Downloads page.
  • You do not need to create an EndNote Online/EndNote Web account at this point
  • Create your EndNote library on your computer's local hard drive, or an attached storage device. Storing and editing libraries on a network or cloud drive can lead to corruption and performance issues. Mac users, the default Endnote library (My Endnote Library) will be automatically created in your documents folder

Technical assistance

AUT IT services will help you solve any installation issues:

Converting an early version EndNote Library to a later version EndNote

You may have saved an existing EndNote Library with an early version, for example, EndNote X9.2.  When you open this Library on a computer with the later EndNote X9 version, such as X9.3.3, EndNote will ask you to convert your library to X9.3.3. Click the link below for more instructions:

  • When opening a library created with an earlier version of EndNote you may encounter the following message asking you to convert your library. Click OK to create a converted library that will work with the newer version.

  • Save the converted library (the file name will include "-converted" generated by EndNote) to the same location of your existing library.
  • Check the converted library. It should have the data folder with the same file name as the new copy and the PDF documents should be able to be read in EndNote. Close the library.
  • Delete (or save elsewhere) your original library and its data folder.
  • Remove "-converted" from the file name of the converted library and its data folder to ensure the file names are exactly the same as the original library.

Access EndNote on Campus

Students

  • EndNote is available on Tech Central computers on campus
  • When using an AUT computer on campus, you can save your library (temporarily) to C drive: C:\Users\Username\Document, or use an existing library from a USB or portable Hard Drive

Staff

If EndNote is not available on your office computer or laptop, you can download the latest EndNote program:

  • from the Software Center for EndNote for Windows
  • from Self-services for Mac computers

Note: EndNote libraries created with EndNote X9.2 or earlier will require conversion to run on EndNote X9.3 or EndNote 21. This will be done automatically when opening the library in a later version of EndNote. However the converted version of the library will then not work on earlier versions of the EndNote program. If you are running EndNote X9.2 or earlier please consider updating your EndNote program to one of the later versions (EndNote X9.3, or EndNote 21).
