EndNote

A comprehensive guide to the reference management software EndNote.

What is EndNote?

EndNote is software to help you manage your references/citations.

EndNote lets you:

  • store and organise references
  • import references from online databases
  • insert citations into a Word document and create a reference list or bibliography in the style of your choice, such as APA 7th
  • share references with other researchers

EndNote is available for Windows and Mac computers, and an online version is also available.

EndNote desktop vs EndNote Web

  • EndNote desktop is software installed on a specific computer. It provides more functionality and is highly recommended.
  • EndNote Web is an online version of the EndNote program and is stored on the EndNote provider Clarivate's servers.

EndNote and referencing styles

  • Even though EndNote will do a lot of work for you, you still need to have a working knowledge of the referencing style you are using, especially when entering references manually into your EndNote library or editing imported references.
  • Some references require specific choices in EndNote records to produce correct citations. Check the APA 7th & EndNote and Chicago & EndNote sections of this guide for some examples.
  • For detailed instructions on referencing generally, check the Library's referencing guides.
