EndNote

A comprehensive guide to the reference management software EndNote.

Applying APA 7th

References imported into EndNote often need corrections to ensure they are in the APA 7th style when inserted into Word using CWYW

This section provides some workarounds to achieve the correct APA 7th output when inserting your references in Word.

  • Ensure APA 7th is selected in the style box in your EndNote Library as well as in the EndNote tab in your Word document.
  • If the following instructions do not work, you can create a plain text version (without the EndNote connection) of your final document and make corrections in the text.

Journal articles

Resource EndNote Reference type Instruction Example
  • The Article Title (Title field) should use Sentence style capitalisation
  • The Journal or Magazine Title (Journal field) should use Title Heading capitalisation (see also Journal Terms List)
  • The Date field is only used if the Month (or Month dd) is required (e.g. for a Magazine article). For a Journal Article this field should be empty
Article with a DOI Journal article
  • Use Reference Type Journal Article, (do not use type "Electronic article", which will not display the DOI)
  • The Type field should only be used when a description is required (eg. "Letter to editor" or "Special section")
  • An Advance Online Publication requires either modifying the style, or plain text editing
  • If a Reprinted article, the reprint information can be entered into the Reprint Edition field (APA Manual, s. 10.1, example 11, pp. 318-319)
