Open Access Publishing Agreements

R&P Agreements glossary

Article Processing Charge (APC): The fee that publishers may charge to publish open access.

Capped agreements: Some publishers have placed caps or limits on the number of articles that are covered by our Read & Publish agreement. Check individual publisher agreements for details.

CAUL: Council of Australasian University Libraries (includes all NZ and 39 Australian university libraries). CAUL negotiates with publishers and manages Read & Publish agreements on AUT's behalf.

Closed access: Also known as subscription-based publishing. Closed articles require a subscription or fee to read, but typically do not charge author APCs.

Corresponding author: The author who is responsible for managing the submission process and responding to journal editors.

Creative Commons (CC) license: Determine how others can use your open access publication. Learn about different licenses on the Creative Commons website.

Gold open access (Gold OA) journals: Also known as fully open access journals. All articles are open access, in exchange for the author paying an APC.

Hybrid journals: Offer authors the choice to pay an APC to make their work open access, or publish closed/subscription access for free.

Open access (OA): Open access articles can be read by anyone, free of charge, without subscription barriers. Learn more in our Open Access guide.

Open Access Publishing agreements: Enable AUT authors to publish open access in hybrid and Gold OA journals without paying APCs. Currently, AUT has agreements with 18 publishers, although not all journals are included in the agreements.
