EndNote for PC

A comprehensive guide to the reference management software EndNote.

EndNote online

There are two online EndNote versions: EndNote Online and EndNote Basic. As an AUT member, you can access to the EndNote Online version.

EndNote Online is the online counterpart of your desktop version. Once set up it provides:

  • Unlimited number of references and unlimited attachments
  • Ability to sync with a local version so you can access your library from multiple locations
  • A back up of a desktop library
  • A Capture tool allowing you to export web-based sources that don't have EndNote's direct export tool
  • Options that streamline reference-sharing with colleagues

EndNote Basic is a free and limited online EndNote version. This online version can be used for people who do not have an EndNote software subscription. An EndNote Basic library can store a maximum of 50,000 references and up to 2G of attachments.

Create an EndNote online account

In order to access to the online version, you should register with EndNote Online. Follow the steps below to complete your registration:

  • Access Web of Science from AUT Library's database page
  • Click Sign in and select Register
  • Enter your email address and choose a password

  • Once you have set up your account you can access EndNote Online via Web of Science or Clarivate Analytics login page from any computer with an Internet connection
  • Your account remains active for 12 months from the date it was last accessed

Download additional tools

There are two essential tools for using EndNote Online/Basic. Click Downloads on your EndNote Online toolbar to find these tools:

Cite While You Write plug-in

CWYW plug-in connects EndNote and Word and enables you to cite while you write in Word.

  • If you have already installed a desktop version of the EndNote software, you don't need to download the Cite While You Write plug-in.
  • If you use EndNote Online without EndNote desktop, or EndNote Basic only, you should install this plug-in.

Capture plug-ins

  • The Capture bookmarklet creates references for websites and other web-based sources that don't have an in-built direct export option
