Referencing or reproducing?

The examples in this section are used to cite visual works in your reference list. To reproduce (include) an image in your text that you did not create yourself, you may also need to seek permission from the copyright owner and include an attribution statement in the Figure notes. See Figures (Graphs and Images) for more guidance, or the APA Manual p. 198, s7.7.

Clip art or stock images

  • If the artist's real name is known, as well as their username or screen name, include the username in square brackets
  • If only a username is available, use that. Do not put it in square brackets or abbreviate it
  • If the artist is unknown or cannot be determined, move the title of the work to the author position, followed by the date as usual
